London, Garage 30th October 2010
came back from holiday specially for this gig – not even the delights
of Slovenia were going to keep me from seeing LAR in London with my
lovely sister Zee
Zee told me that we were being encouraged to dress up Hallowe’en style for
the gig, so we did a bit of shopping in the Angel market – I found a fab
witch’s hat and some black roses, and Zee got some gorgeous fairy
wings. Note to Steve: they are dark side wings, *not* Placebo wings
Unfortunately we didn’t win the prize (as Steve said, it wasn’t a prize
for the biggest hat, lol), but it was a good excuse to do a bit of dark
side glam – and even Pete enjoyed wearing the hat for a bit
We were a bit scared that the gig wasn’t going to happen, having heard
that Southampton had been postponed during Keith’s illness. It turned
out he’d eaten a bad fish pie, which prompted Jen to yell ‘Should have
had shepherd’s pie!’ – a reference to one of Steve’s pet phrases, taken
from an old Oxo advert
This was the first time I’d seen the support band, Inner City Pirates. They
are excellent, and are certainly a band to keep an eye on. I liked their
pumpkin lanterns by the merch stand, and appreciated the free download
on offer.
It was also the first time I’ve seen LAR with Teresa
Morini on bass. Wow – she is awesome! I guess with most bands, the
attention is focused mainly on the lead singer, and of course we all
love our Steve. But I have to say, this is a *band* - and they are all
so talented with such stage presence that they *all* command our
attention. Donneye’s ‘dying sheep’ riffs on Come on Say It and Hove’s
virtuoso performance on Got To Give It Up (Thin Lizzy cover – dedicated
by Steve ‘to an ex-friend of mine’) shine through in particular. And
Keith giving it LARge on drums, ending every song with a flourish
As a band they have made a tight unit, clearly enjoying being and
playing together. Hearing them live has made me yearn to hear the new
tracks that they’re already working on. Greedy, much?!
We ran into Steve’s daughter, who sang the beautiful backing vocals on ‘Love
Song’ on the album. This was the first time she was seeing her dad play
live with his new band, and afterwards it was clear that the old man had
*not* embarrassed his girl! We were lucky enough to join the
after-party and chat a bit with Steve and ‘squish the Eye’ (thanks Zee
for dragging him over to be molested by us!). I also chatted with Hove
properly for the first time, and found him adorable.
It was a great night and a fine start to the UK tour.
