So you were born in Brussels? Is that true?!
Yeah, it's true ! .. Why did it surprise you that much?
Because i've never read that you were born in Brussels..
Ah yeah, yeah.. Nearly 37 years ago, but i don't really remember. We weren't there for so long.. So i don't remember "living" in Belgium so when i go back to Brussels, i don't have a souvenir that i lived there, it's not really a place for me that rings a bell . I don't mean it's negative, necesserly, you know what i mean, but people often ask me "you must have a lot of souvenirs there", BUT i don't remember ! So, not so much!
Which is very suprising, is that, we used to say in Belgium that when we go down to the South, so around Liège etc.. we have a lot of fun but when we arrive in Luxembourg, we're so bored. So it's a good point for you, because it's why you learnt guitare
Well, yes it's exactly that. It's true that in the 80's, we were really bored in Lux, me and Stefan. So our reaction was to locked ourselves in our bedrooms, with a lot of music, and learn to play instruments. It was this idea of.. the idea of the escaping of this boredom that pushed us to have this determination to make something artistical with our life. But, we did that seperatly. We were in the same country, in the same school, but we were not mates so.. But our lives were pretty similar. So when we met in London by accident.. well. There it is!
It's something essential. Placebo, since you were a kid, a teenager, you knew that you were gonna play music, and it was necessary for you, and it's good that the adventure is still on the road, even today. I think it's great that you are still like a family, a second family.
Well, yeah, it's a second family, it's a surrogate family! The difference is that you can chose this family. This is the big luxury! And the main difference. But for me, i moved in London when i was 17, and i went to the uni, to study drama and that was my first passion. And it's after my studies that i took the decision to make music. But i think, for me and Stef too, our motivation was .. Well, the idea of living like metro-work-sleep just filled us with such a depression that it was really really important that we made something artistical with our lives. So when we took this decision, we have to burn bridge behind us, in order to NOT change our minds especially !
So you are happy and pleased today. Well, when we know your new album, it was necessary for you to do it like that, to be more "clean", to say it clearly. To go up on stage, it was good. You seem super-hot (lol), you do a lot of gigs. Is there still the same excitement and the same great pleasure, this same necessary need to be on stage?
Well yes yes ! Me and Stef are too shy guy, pretty introverted so we need sort of exhibitionist but we have to have a context for this exhibitionist and the stage IS this context. And it's also something very elementary so we feel really .. i don't know.. we feel.. It's something simple, elementary, and immediate. An instant answer, this instant energy of the crowd, that fill you, yourself, with a sort of euphoria. Everytime we go on stage, that we can create kind of a collective euphoria in the auditorium. So well, that's what we're trying to do!
Is it true that when you were a teenager, you sat on your toilet pretending you were interviewed?!
Yes it's true, it's true. Well i didn't think.. Humm.. Well i must say, and don't take it personally, that the interviews are really not my favourite things!
Well, is it okay today?
Yeah, here it's okay! Yeah, yeah .. I don't really like to talk about myself but .. yeah. It's true, it's true. Yeah. Yes.. *embarassed*
What were you thinking? Well, it's funny because i kinda feel that you're having a flash-back!
Well, yeah, i've got it pictured in my head! But i think that i must have known that.. i don't know.. that someday, people will ask me questions! Sometimes interesting, and some other just boring!
So right on time.. I see next to you, you have a littl Buddha. India is a place where you love to travel, where you go to "recharge" yourself?
Yes, yes it's an incredible country that i love. I really love Asia, in general. And yes, before Meds, i spent sometime in India as a "beach bum". And it was really cool, really really cool. It's really a colourful country, extreme country. It's just crazy. Let's say that when you go to Japan it's more like landing on the planet Mars, and go to India, is like landing on the planet Mercury!
And going to Cambodgia was also.. You went there, right? I think to play for something really important to you, well, human traffic.
Yeah, we went in december 2008, we went to Siemréab, in Cambodgia, to perform a little gig in front of a 12century's temple. And everything was about charity to stop human traffic, prostitution, work in sweatshop etc.. And that is something really important for me, really. Human traffic, i think it's something shocking and unforgivable in a world that is supposed to be "civilize", and modern. And we try to show to young people what you have to avoid, in order NOT to fall in this trap because it's more risky to teenagers and young adult, in Asia, and the East of Europe.
What makes Brian Molko full of pleasure and happyness today?
Well, when i spend time with my son, that is good. Yeah, that is the best thing in the world.
Thank you so much, it's so nice of you.
Well, thank you !
Sorry for my English, which is not the best at all xD
