British musician Chris Corner, perhaps best known as a founding member of ’90s trip-hop outfit Sneaker Pimps, moved to Berlin in 2003 and the decision proved to be both a blessing and a curse.
On one hand, the change of scenery provided Corner with the confidence and creative mindset to create IAMX – an electronic experiment in both sight and sound with menacing undertones that touch on everything from heavy EDM to burlesque aesthetics. Although IAMX released five full-lengths between 2004 and 2013 and garnered Corner an enthusiastic new fanbase, living in Germany took an emotional toll on him.
The upcoming sixth album from IAMX, Metanoia, is Corner’s account of battling mental illness before relocating again – this time to Los Angeles. The album title comes from the Greek word “metanoein,” which means to change one’s mind, and the record (set for release Oct. 2 via Metropolis) reveals layer upon layer of Corner’s introspection. He told us “No Maker Made Me” – the new song Diffuser is proud to premiere – came about a few years back when he became fascinated with the New Atheism movement.
“I wanted to expose the two sides of the human struggle with religion. on the one hand, religious thinking is ridiculous and antiquated – it’s a destructive, divisive force – and, on the other hand, humans desire to believe in something higher than themselves and to relieve themselves of responsibility or the burden of a futile existence,” he said. “When you first remove religion or even just the vague idea of God from your life, it can be a huge existential struggle. This song is about that struggle, or rather my own struggle of trying to fill the spiritual void with other meaning.”
Corner said the subject matter informed the musical tone. “I felt it should sound angry, heavy and high octane to reflect the frustration,” he said. “I made the music glitch and splutter as if I was being exorcised while also having this dreamlike female vocal mantra there like a guiding light bringing me out of the fog and nonsense of spiritual hope.”
